brain_eye_heart_hand

There are 4 components, or source points for confluence (and indeed discovery), that I wish to consider at play for this exhibit. They are: brain, eye, heart and hand.

In isolation, their usefulness and role are quite straightforward and I apply them here quite literally.

perspective

A gem cannot be polished without friction, nor a man without trials. (Seneca)

At the confluence of brain and eye, I propose that I find perspective. Mentally, an outlook and optically, a view.

desire

Without music, life would be a mistake. (Friedrich Nietzsche)

At the confluence of eye and heart, I propose that I find desire. Optically, an object or thing and emotionally, a conception or longing.

volition

We write or we are written upon. The whole of our lives is the clumsy attempt to wield the pen with grace. (Vincent Louis Carrella)

At the confluence of heart and hand, I propose that I find volition. Emotionally, will-power and physically, a tool.

ability

I will not be concerned at other men’s not knowing me; I will be concerned at my own want of ability. (Confucius)

At the confluence of hand and brain, I propose that I find ability. Physically, mechanics and mentally, intellect.

At this stage, things become more intricate.

individual

It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it. (Aristotle)

At the confluence of perspective (brain/eye) and desire (eye/heart), I propose that I find an individual viewpoint with both perspective and desire being of the self. This is personal.
subjective

The focus of subjectivity is a distorting mirror. (Hans-Georg Gadamer)

At the confluence of desire (eye/heart) and volition (heart/hand), I propose that I find a subjective viewpoint dependant upon a willed self. This is judgemental.

participatnt

Never discourage anyone who continually makes progress, no matter how slow. (Plato)

At the confluence of volition (heart/hand) and ability (hand/brain), I propose that I find a participant viewpoint where engagement reigns. This is community.

objective

Dispassionate objectivity is itself a passion, for the real and for the truth. (Abraham Maslow)

At the confluence of ability (hand/brain) and perspective (brain/eye), I propose that I find an objective viewpoint where a physical reality is evidentiary. This is accepting.

And finally, we arrive at the absolute complexity and unknown of the proposal.

the_middle

And forget not that the earth delights to feel your bare feet and the winds long to play with your hair. (Khalil Gibran)

I’m not sure what lies at the core, but I’d like to have a better idea of what is there. Join me on this journey, and let’s find out together.
