“I’m sorry if…”

We’ve all been on the receiving end of an apology that starts with “I’m sorry if …” which has the primary achievement of telling us that the apology is being delivered under duress rather than with sincerity.

The current backlash at Fox over O’Reilly’s harassing past is following suit. The spokesperson for one company now deciding to stop advertising with the show has been quoted as saying:

“As a company in which more than two-thirds of our employees are women, we take sexual harassment claims very seriously”

Because if they DIDN’T have 2/3 women, they wouldn’t take it seriously…?
